Today’s match pits a German tradition against a new kid on the block from Taiwan. A visual inspection shows that both pens are well made. The eMotion screw-on cap features a 1 1/4 twist, which is nice for quick on and off, the YStudio is a snap on cap, which fits securely but removes easily. The Cap of the eMotion is a work of art in itself weighing about the same as the rest of the pen. The eMotion is visually appealing, while the YStudio is utilitarian and does not look like a pen in this price range. The eMotion has a little play on the section where it feels loose while the YStudio onlu takes short international c/c. The edge here goes to the eMotion because it just looks considerably nicer.
Both pens are cartridge/converter pens which were simple to ink. Both pens start immediately with no pause or skips. In the “5 minutes with no cap” start test, the eMotion has a slight pause in the first letter, while the YStudio struggled in the first two letters. Both pens performed well in the consistency of writing test, with a slight edge to the eMotion.
The cigar shaped pen has been an enigma to me. I really like the way they look, but I do not prefer the way they feel when I write. Add to that the slippery chrome section, and it causes me to grip the pen too tightly. Conversely, the resign over brass of the YStudio is very comfortable in my hand and wins the grip test.
Both nibs are steel and write with a smooth stroke, with very little feedback and the right amount of resistance. The eMotion is slightly more smooth and I would call it one of the best steel nibs that I own. This is a tough one because they are both very good. Additionally, my handwriting is very good with both pens and again, the slight edge goes to eMotion because it’s just so good.
It looks like the eMotion has a 6-2 edge going into fan voting.

I’m new to you, so I don’t know your rating scale. Is it 1-5, 1-10?

On the Pen Battles, there is a scale of 0-3, based on the dominance of the pen that is superior in each category.
