Lamy 2000

As a fountain pen newbie I want to learn everything I can about what other people think about pens. So, as I read the lists of favorite fountain pens and the expert reviews there was one pen that seemed to make everyone’s list, the Lamy 2000. So, when I finally was able to purchase my very own Lamy 2000, I expected the pen to be the greatest of the great and just overshadow all of my other pens. So, something you may have never heard before… that did not happen. In my opinion, this pen is over-hyped and overrated.

Lamy was founded in 1930 by a German Parker Pen salesman. The 2000 is Lamy’s flagship pen and uses a special polycarbonate resin. It has been highly praised since its release in 1966 for its unique design and durability.

Personally, I am not that fond of the way the pen looks. The resin probably looked very futuristic in 1966 but now it looks like something, well, from the 60’s. Additionally, unlike many fountain pen purists, I am not fond of the hooded nib. I like to look at the nib when I write. I think nibs are beautiful. That being said, the way a pen looks is not as important to me as the way it writes and I do like some things about the pen. The way the cap snaps into place, the piston filler, and it does write pretty good, though not as good as what I expected from the rave reviews.

I originally ordered this pen with a fine nib, but it wrote like a heavy medium so the fine folks as Big Pen allowed my to trade out the nib. The extra-fine nib writes about the same line as a my MF Pilot Custom Heritage. Maybe this pen will grow on me over time, but as for now I am not impressed. DO NOT pay $200+ for this pen. I found it for $145.50. Buy Here

  1. I have met a lot of pen enthusiast and the Lamy 2000 is one of those pens that people either love or dislike. It’s not for everyone. It’s still an iconic modern pen for it’s it’s level of engineering focus on a well functioning and rugged pen.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I look forward to seeing more of your reviews.
