When I purchased my first Platinum Century 3776, I was still in the “finer is better” mode of my collecting experience. However, this pen’s extra-fine model was actually the one that broke me of that mindset. I found the experience similar to writing with an xacto knife. I traded it to a friend for the medium nib and my eyes were opened to a whole new world of writing – thank you, Alex.
The Platinum Pen Company was founded in Japan in 1919 as a stationery company called “Platinum Fountain Pen Co., Ltd.” Initially, the company produced fountain pens under OEM contracts for other brands. In 1924, the company began producing pens under its own name, and in 1962, it changed its name to “Platinum Pen Co., Ltd.” Since then, Platinum has become a well-known brand in the writing instrument industry. It is considered one of the “Big 3” Japanese pen manufacturers, along with Sailor and Pilot.
This pen is in my regular rotation and I like the professional look of the black mode. However, I will probably buy another one at some point because I love the look of the chartreuse model with the gold trim. The nib is very wet and you’ll want to use an ink that has zero feathering, The feel of the nib on the paper is very similar to the Sailor medium nib, with perhaps slightly less feedback, but with that same “pencil” feel. The proprietary converter holds a ton of ink but I have had issues with getting it to seat properly, which only really shows up in the inking process – it never leaks. Also, they are true to their advertising that the pen can sit on the shelf for weeks and never dry out. If you are a collector, this is a must have for your collection. If you are looking for a reliable pen that writes well and looks great, this is a must have for your collection. An added benefit to this pen is that for around $100, you can get a pen that writes as well as any pen on the market. Buy Here
