Sailor Pro Gear Realo

I love Sailor and I love built-in piston fillers. So when I learned that Sailor has a Pro Gear Realo and a 1911 Realo are just these Sailor lines with piston fillers, I couldn’t wait to try it out.

Sailor was founded in 1911 in Hiroshima, Japan. Kyugoro Sakata, an engineer, was introduced to a Fountain Pen by an English sailor and he decided he wanted to create a finely crafted writing instrument from Japan. They began manufacturing fountain pens in 1918. Sailor was the first Japanese fountain pen manufacturer, launched to first Japanese manufactured ballpoint pens, Japan’s first plastic fountain pens using injection molding, Japan’s first ink cartridges, the world’s first 21k nibs, and the first fude pen. Sailor’s gold fountain pen nibs are known for their characteristic feedback. As you write, it is normal to feel the vibrations of the nib as it traverses the microscopic nooks and crannies of the paper.

When I first held this pen in my hand, I was enamored. It is a little heavier and a little longer than the standard Sailor Professional Gear pen. It just looks and feels great. The piston filler works great, with a smooth action that feels very much like the Pelikan piston filler. When I first inked the pen and put the nib to paper, I actually made an audible sound of pleasure. The broad Sailor nib writes just slightly broader than most of my medium nib pens and the writing experience is, in my opinion, ideal. Ironically, the broad nib on the Sailor writes pretty much the same stroke width as the Pelikan m600 extra-fine nib. (See Below) I have nothing but good things to say about this pen. Go get one!
