Otto Hutt Design 01

I remember the day I first “splurged” on a fountain pen. I saw this pen in sage green and I had to have it. I didn’t know anything at all about Otto Hutt or who makes their own nibs or which pens a collector is supposed to have… all I knew is that this pen looked cool and I was willing to pay almost $100 for a pen. I will say that was my first real plunge into the rabbit hole of fountain pen collecting. When I received the pen, I realized at once the difference between a $20 pen and a $100 pen. My first few hours writing with this pen were magical.

Otto Hutt was founded by Karl Hutt in 1920, then successfully run by his son, Otto in around 1960. The whole idea behind the style of the pens is Bauhaus. What is the Bauhaus style, you ask. Paraphrasing Google, Bauhaus is a German artistic movement which began in 1919. Its goal was to merge all artistic mediums into one unified approach, that of combining an individual’s artistry with mass production and function. Bauhaus design is often abstract, angular, and geometric, with little ornamentation. In other words, clean lines with no bells and whistles. The nobs are said to be made by Peter Bock AG and stamped with the Otto Hutt design.

If I were to do a blindfolded test of all of my pens, I am fairly certain this pen would be either the one that I would choose as the best writer, or at least in the top two or three – even though it is a stainless steel nib. I have loved this pen since the day I got it. Technically, it is too small for my humongous meat hooks (big hands) but I haven’t noticed. If pens had mileage, this one’s odometer would have more miles than any of my other pens. I highly recommend this pen for anyone who is looking for a work horse that looks simple but good and writes like a dream. (Buy here)
