YSTUDIO Resin

I’ve been seeing this pen for a while. The problem is that the name begins with a Y, so by the time I get to Y (if I get to the Ys) I’m tired of looking. But, I say to myself, “That pen is interesting, I need to look at it again some time.” I may never have got around to purchasing it, but someone got it for me for Christmas this year. I’ve been using it a lot at work as it is a great every day pen.

YSTUDIO was founded in Taiwan in 2012. They pursue simplicity in their designs, as well as high quality and value. The pens are inspired by the timeless look of well loved tools.

When looking at the pictures below, my photography is (much) less than professional, so the color of the pen is actually closer to the darker red on the large picture than the orangish red of the capped pen on my desk. When I first opened the pen I felt that it might be overpriced, given how light it is. It reminded me of the entry level pens like the Preppy and Metropolitan. However, once I started writing with the pen, the reason for the expense became clear. This pen is very well made and rugged. It will out live us all. Being a trumpet player, I especially like the brass section (you either get it or you don’t). This fine point pen writes a little more fine than I prefer – more like the Japanese fine points, and more fine than the TWSBI fine point. If I were to buy another YSTUDIO, which is very possible, I will get a medium nib.

Writing with this pen is enjoyable. It fits well in my hand and is ideal for longer writing sessions, due to the lightness of the pen and the easy flow of the nib on the paper. I’ve used this pen on the best quality paper and a cheap legal pad and it performs like a champ on both. This is a worker bee pen. Someone may see it and say, “cool pen”, but no one is going to go on about how beautiful it is. I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks, but I expect that this pen will stay in my daily rotation for a long time.
